Detoxing--it's not as bad as you think

Detoxing, or "Spring Cleaning" for your body, can sound like a bad dream.  Let's face it, it's easier to keep the closet doors closed instead organizing and cleaning out all that junk that's accumulated over the years.  Why bother to clean the closet, you say?  A clean closet works better--it's easier to find your favorite jacket, and you feel good every time you open it.  Well, it's the same with our bodies.  A clean body works better--it's easier for our body to use the nutrients that we feed it, and we feel great every time we use our bodies!

How do you know when to detox?  Personally, I detox at least once a year, if not once per season.  If you have:

--fatigue
--unwanted pounds
--smelly breath
--smelly feet
--loud bowel sounds
--flatulence
--indigestion or irritable digestion
--a not-so-balanced diet or a diet lacking fiber
--frequent headaches
--skin rashes
--acne...

your body may be try to tell you something.  Maybe it's time to detox!  You'll feel great and love yourself for doing it!

How do I detox?  One method is to eat a very strict diet for 2-14 days which is often very difficult to do and not so pleasant.  Can you imagine eating only prunes, for example, for 14 days?  A better method is to continually:

1.  Eat a well-balanced diet avoiding junk food.
2.  Take vitamin supplements, including non-contaminated sources of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats.
3.  Take detoxifying fiber in the form of psyllium seed husks, fruit pectin and oats.
4.  Take gentle acting herbs and alfalfa that will stimulate your own body's cleansing (2-14 days only).
5.  Avoid chemicals such as pesticides and weed killers, and use only environmentally-friendly cleaning products.
6.  Eat organically or peel non-organic fruits and vegetables.
7.  Filter your water and drink plenty of it.
8.  Use an air-cleaning system and open your windows since indoor air tends to be more polluted than the air outside.
9.  Avoid using plastic in the microwave and use more natural products for storing food.
10.  Exercise in the open air!

The "Dirty Dozen" non-organic foods to avoid due to their chemical content.  Chose only the organic variety for these foods:

1. Butter
2. Salmon
3. Spinach
4. Strawberries
5. Cream cheese
6. Raisins
7. Apple, red, raw, unpeeled.  So sad.  It take 20+ chemicals to make a non-organic apple!!
8. Dill cucumber pickles
9. Summer squash
10. Green peppers
11. Collards
12. Processed cheese

Yes, it's surprising how much of these we ingest that could be harmful even though they are healthy foods.  Just making better choices can make big differences in how you feel.  Please contact me if you have any questions concerning this or other nutritional or massage topics.
