Choosing your Multi
Having a multivitamin every day can make a significant impact on your health. Think of it as 'filling in the cracks' for any missed nutrition during the day. When choosing your multivitamin/multimineral, here are a few hints to be sure it's going to work the most effectively:
- Time how long your multivitamin takes to dissolve in water! If it dissolves within 20 minutes, then your body will also be able to break it down quickly and absorb the nutrients fast. If it takes longer than 20 minutes to dissolve, then most likely, it's not a high quality brand.
- Biotin and Folic Acid are expensive nutrients to extract for a tablet. For this reason, most low quality vitamin brands only include 10% of the RDA (recommended Daily Allowance). Look for a multi with 100% of the RDA for both Biotin and Folic Acid.
- All 8 B-Complex vitamins should appear in equal proportion to each other. Follow the RDA. If there is 100% of the RDA of B1, then you should see 100% for all the other B vitamins as well. PS--The B vitamins are called the 'Happy Vitamin' because they are a major player in reducing our stress (really!!). B vitamins also help us to stop our sweet tooth and sugar cravings (really!!).
- Zinc and Copper should appear in equal RDA percentages in your multivitamin.
- Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphorous are bulky substances. Including 100% of the RDA for these nutrients would make you vitamin too big to swallow. A good multivitamin, therefore, won't include 100% of these nutrients.
